India tightened their grip on the first Test against Bangladesh at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai, with a commanding all-round performance on Day 3. R Ashwin was the star with the ball, taking 3 wickets as Bangladesh ended the day on 158/4 in 37.2 overs, trailing India by 357 runs. Najmul Hossain Shanto (51*) and Shakib Al Hasan (5*) will resume batting on Day 4.
India declared their second innings at 287/4 earlier in the day, setting Bangladesh a formidable target of 515 runs. Shubman Gill (119*) and Rishabh Pant (109) shone with the bat, both registering centuries to push India into a dominant position. Pant’s century was his 6th in Test cricket, equalling MS Dhoni’s record for the most Test centuries by an Indian wicketkeeper, while Gill reached his 5th century in style.
Bangladesh’s chase began with promise, but Jasprit Bumrah gave India the first breakthrough, dismissing Zakir Hasan for 33. The visitors struggled against Ashwin, who dismissed Shadman Islam (35), Mominul Haque (13), and Mushfiqur Rahim (13), leaving Bangladesh in a tough spot.
With Bangladesh needing another 357 runs and only six wickets in hand, India will be aiming to finish the match early on Day 4.
