Bengaluru Food Safety Department Investigates Allegations of Dog Meat Disguised as Mutton

A tense situation unfolded in Bengaluru following allegations that dog meat was being transported and sold as mutton. The Food Safety and Standards Department has launched a detailed investigation into the matter after Hindutva groups raised concerns about the meat being transported from Jaipur to Bengaluru.

On Friday evening, chaos erupted at KSR railway station when members of Hindutva groups accused a local vendor of supplying dog meat disguised as mutton. According to the allegations, the meat was being transported from Jaipur via the Jaipur-Mysuru Express. The vendor, who has claimed to be in the business for the past 12 years, insisted that the meat was indeed mutton.

In response to the allegations, food safety officials promptly arrived at the scene and collected samples of the meat for lab testing to determine its origin. The Food Safety Commissioner stated, “During the inspection, it was discovered that parcels received from Rajasthan via train were being loaded into a vehicle outside the station premises. We found 90 parcels containing animal meat, which were then collected for analysis to identify the species of the meat.”

The commissioner assured the public that strict legal action would follow if the tests reveal that the meat was not mutton. “Based on the lab results, appropriate legal measures will be taken. We are also gathering detailed information about the FSSAI licenses of both the senders and recipients of these parcels. Any discrepancies will be dealt with according to the law,” he added.

The incident has caused considerable panic among Bengaluru residents and meat consumers. Former Infosys CFO Mohandas Pai expressed his concern on X (formerly Twitter), saying, “This is shocking. When will our government act?” The investigation is ongoing, and the results of the lab tests will determine the next steps in addressing the allegations and ensuring food safety.
