Tirupati Temple’s laddus, distributed during Ayodhya Ram Temple’s ‘pran pratishtha’ ceremony, have sparked controversy following allegations of the use of animal fat in the ghee used for their preparation. The matter is now under investigation, with the chief priest of Ayodhya demanding strict action if the claims are proven true.
Tirupati Temple’s iconic laddus, distributed earlier this year at the Ram Temple in Ayodhya during its ‘pran pratishtha’ ceremony, have become the focal point of a major controversy. Acharya Satyendra Das, the chief priest of the Ayodhya temple, confirmed that 300 kg of Tirupati laddus were handed out to devotees during the consecration ceremony in January.
The controversy arose when the Chandrababu Naidu-led Telugu Desam Party (TDP) alleged that substandard ingredients, including animal fat, were used in the ghee for preparing the laddus. A lab report from Gujarat, cited by Naidu’s party, claimed the presence of “beef tallow,” “lard” (pig fat), and fish oil in the ghee used to make the offerings.
Acharya Satyendra Das, expressing his anger, stated, “If animal fat was used in the ‘prasad’, it is unforgivable and a gross violation of the Hindu faith. Strict action must be taken against those responsible for this sacrilege.” He further urged that a thorough investigation be conducted by a credible investigative agency, stating that such allegations are a mockery of the faith, particularly for Vaishnav devotees who strictly avoid even garlic and onions in their diet.
The Andhra Pradesh government, under YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, has denied the allegations, claiming it is a diversionary tactic by the opposition. Meanwhile, Union Health Minister JP Nadda has stepped in, asking for a report on the issue from Andhra Pradesh authorities. Nadda has assured that a detailed examination will be carried out and that appropriate actions will follow as per the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) regulations.
The laddus, considered sacred ‘prasad’, were gifted by former Andhra CM YS Jagan Mohan Reddy to Prime Minister Narendra Modi multiple times during his visits to Delhi between 2019 and 2024, further fueling the public outcry and demand for a transparent investigation.
