A troubling incident has emerged from Bhubaneswar, Odisha, where the fiancée of an Army officer has alleged sexual harassment by police personnel. This case has sparked outrage, leading to the suspension of five police officers and demands for a thorough investigation.
In a recent statement, former Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik expressed his shock over the allegations, calling for a court-monitored Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe and a judicial inquiry into the incident. He condemned the actions of the police and emphasized the need for swift justice.
The incident occurred when the Army officer and his fiancée sought refuge at Bharatpur Police Station after being harassed by a group of individuals. Instead of receiving assistance, they faced further violence. The fiancée, who is also a lawyer and runs a restaurant in the area, reported that she was physically assaulted and subjected to degrading treatment by police officers.
The woman detailed her harrowing experience, highlighting how her attempts to seek help were met with hostility. Following her release on bail, she filed a formal complaint against the officers involved, leading to widespread protests by women activists demanding accountability.
The National Commission for Women (NCW) has taken notice of the situation, seeking an urgent report from the Director General of Police. This incident has raised serious concerns about police conduct and the treatment of citizens, particularly women, in distressing situations.
