In a tragic incident, a two-storey building collapsed in Delhi’s Karol Bagh area on Wednesday morning, leaving three dead and 14 others injured. The collapse occurred around 9 a.m. in the densely populated Bapa Nagar locality, according to local police.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central), M. Harsh Vardhan, stated, “We received information about the building collapse at Prasad Nagar Police Station. The structure, located on a plot of approximately 25 square yards, suddenly came down.”
While the exact cause of the collapse is still under investigation, it is suspected that the building’s age combined with recent heavy rains in the city may have contributed to the incident.
Delhi’s chief minister-designate, Atishi, expressed her sorrow over the loss of lives and directed officials to expedite relief efforts for the victims. In a message posted on X (formerly Twitter), she wrote, “This is a heartbreaking incident. I have instructed the District Magistrate to ensure immediate assistance to those affected and guarantee that the injured receive timely medical care. Investigations are already underway to determine the cause of this collapse.”
Atishi also stressed the importance of public vigilance, urging citizens to report any unsafe buildings or potential structural hazards to the authorities. “Given the heavy rainfall this year, it’s critical that we take action if we notice any signs of structural danger. Please inform the government if you see anything suspicious, and we will respond swiftly to prevent further tragedies.”
